It’s time for the annual Best of Houzz awards, where we celebrate the most popular images on the site over the past year. We’ve pulled together the top 11 kitchen images on Houzz and scoured them to see what ideas and inspiration we can glean from them.
They’re a fascinating mix, packed with clever storage solutions, beautiful pantry cupboards and hard-working island units. You might also spot a popular colour trend. Want to find out more? In no particular order, here are the top 11 kitchen images of last year.
Build in bespoke storage
If there’s one thing Houzzers really love, it’s a clever storage solution, and no fewer than six of the images in this round-up feature built-in pantry cupboards. This tall unit is a lovely example of bespoke cabinetry packed with clever storage options, from slim shelves inside the door for herbs and spices, to deeper shelves for dry goods and neat baskets for organising fruit and vegetables.
The dark grey exterior paint is neatly on-trend, particularly when teamed with white cupboards elsewhere in the kitchen for a ‘mix-and-match’ effect.

Double up your storage
Another take on the larder cupboard, this photo has been saved 37,000 times on Houzz. The beautiful, hand-painted unit has plenty of shelving and spice racks for storing dry goods, herbs and spices, but it’s also fitted with five large drawers below for extra storage and a marble-topped work station, prefect for storing appliances or installing a tea and coffee station.
The kitchen also features another popular item – an island unit. Large drawers at the end of the unit painted the same grey as the pantry cupboard neatly pull the two elements together and provide even more storage.
Embrace cottage style
This cottage-style kitchen was a clear winner; you wanted to know everything about it, from the paint colours to where the floor tiles, cupboards, worktops, range cooker and even the shelving were from.
The design is a clever mix of country and contemporary and it clearly ticked a lot of Houzzers’ kitchen wish list boxes. A modern range cooker, seamlessly integrated into a row of Shaker-style cabinets, creates a traditional country framework, while contemporary elements, such as white metro tiles with dark-grey grout and on-trend open shelving, bring the look up to date.
Plump for a pale grey
This kitchen really got Houzzers talking. It was saved more than 280,000 times and can you guess the most frequently asked question? ‘What paint colour did you use for the cabinets?’ Happily, the designer responded to all your queries, providing extra information on everything from the lighting to the worktop material. You can click on the image for more information.
In case you’re wondering, the island is painted in Chicory and the cabinets in Meadowsweet, both bespoke colours by Tom Howley.
Celebrate island life
This country-style kitchen in Rutland was a huge hit with Houzzers and has been saved to ideabooks more than 110,000 times. A hard-working island unit takes centre stage and serves several functions, thanks to built-in storage cupboards, a large food preparation area, an inset sink and an integrated breakfast bar.
The floor tiles, pendant lights and wooden worktop were also rated by Houzzers.
Take organisation up a level
If you loved the previous two pantry cupboards, how about this beauty? Furnished with eight generous shelves, plenty of slim storage in the doors and two large vegetable baskets, it’s an organised chef’s dream!
Plus, by building it into a row of cabinets like this, it’s a neat, foldaway option for those who like to keep all their cooking ingredients close to hand, but not always on display.
Choose open-plan living
This bright and airy space with bifold doors leading out into the garden is refreshingly contemporary and made it into the ideabooks and wish lists of 160,000 Houzzers.
The wide plank flooring in particular really caught the attention of Houzzers, as did the pitched roof lights and oversized pendant lighting.

Add in bifold doors
This recessed pantry cupboard with a marble worktop was another popular design. The doors are a neat feature; a clever bifold function means they can lie flat against the wall, allowing full access to the work surface and shelves.
The generous marble worktop and upstand enable the area to be used for food preparation as well as storing appliances.
Put a contemporary spin on storage
A more contemporary take on the larder cupboard, this image shows how to make the most of a tall, slim space next to an appliance. The narrow cupboard is superbly organised, with neat walnut shelving for packets and jars, a door-mounted spice rack and two deep drawers for vegetables or larger packets.
The rest of the kitchen is sleek and modern, with handleless cupboards, dark walnut accents and a large, American-style fridge-freezer, proving that larder cupboards aren’t just the preserve of country-style kitchens.
Get to the back of the cupboard
This photo has been one of the most popular on Houzz for several years running. The clever use of an awkward corner space clearly resonates with Houzzers and it’s been saved to ideabooks a grand total of 420,000 times.
It’s a neat solution for a common kitchen storage problem, and no doubt appeals to homeowners fed up with scrabbling around in corner cupboards looking for that one saucepan right at the back.

Up the luxe
This high-gloss kitchen brings in the luxe factor thanks to lacquered cabinet fronts, polished floor tiles and sparkling pendant lights. There are several interesting features integrated into the island, too: strip lighting underneath creates the optical illusion of a floating unit, while a wine fridge and microwave are tucked into either side.
